The scenario: You get a new client who is not tech savvy, so you help by creating a Facebook page for them. But that means you (the agency) are the automatic owners of that page. But down the road, the client chooses to stop services with you and wants the Facebook page ownership transferred over to them.

What do you do?

Every article I could find out there gave unhelpful instructions for this unique situation. They all only answer the question of transferring Facebook page ownership from personal access, NOT business portfolio access within your Meta Business Manager account.

VERY DIFFERENT PROCESS.

So I finally threw it in ChatGPT and found some more straightforward instructions that I wanted to share that will be helpful to marketing agencies who manage client Facebook accounts and run into the situation of needing to transfer ownership.

So here's how to transfer agency ownership of a Facebook page to the client:

ree

Step 1: Confirm the Page’s current ownership

(this should be your agency if you're reading this post)

  • Go to business.facebook.com → Business Settings.

  • Under Accounts → Pages, select the Page.

  • On the right-hand side, under the page name and ID number, you’ll see"Owned by" listed (this will be your Business Portfolio).

Step 2: Add the client’s Business Portfolio

  • To transfer ownership, the client needs their own Business Portfolio (Meta Business Manager). That means if the client only has a personal Facebook page and wants to be the owner of that page, they will need to create a Business Manager account in order to get the Business ID. Once they provide you with their Business ID:

    • Go to business.facebook.com → Business Settings

    • Under Accounts → Pages, select the Page

    • Click Assign Partners.

    • Enter the Business Manager ID of your client’s Business Portfolio.

    • Give them Admin access to the Page.

Step 3: Client accepts and claims ownership

  • Your client will log into their Business Manager.

  • They’ll see a notification/request to accept access to the Page.

    • Go to business.facebook.com → Business Settings → Requests (left hand column)

  • Once accepted, they’ll have full admin rights through their own Business Portfolio.

Step 4: Remove your agency’s ownership

  • After confirming the client has Admin access via their Business Manager, go back to your own Business Manager.

  • Navigate to Business Settings → Accounts → Pages.

  • Select the Page → Click Remove.

  • This will detach your Business Portfolio as the owner, leaving the client as the sole owner.

Important Note:

  • You cannot “transfer” ownership directly — you first grant the client’s Business Manager full access, then remove your own.

  • If the Page was created under your Business Portfolio, this is the only way to release it to the client.

  • Make sure the client confirms they see themselves as Page Owner before you remove your agency’s access.

Marketing agencies like The Digital Perch run into many unique situations that solutions or support aren't easily found online, so I hope this helps resolve your Facebook owner transfer simple and easy.
